STEPN launches new update version
STEPN, the popular move-to-earn app, has recently released a new update to its gaming mechanism.
- The new update recently released adds a complex ANTI-CHEAT mechanism to the game.
- The new anti-cheat mechanism was implemented in an effort to limit the number of bots and malicious users unfairly trying to earn more from the move-to-earn game using motion detection software.
In order to implement the new update, the game had to be taken offline for several hours to implement the change after it was announced that GPS support would be removed in China.
Unfortunately, the new update led to another issue as some users have been identified as bots using the new system due to a DDOS attack on the server.
The attacks happened just a few days after STEPN unveiled its anti-cheating system, dubbed “STEPN’s Model for Anti-Cheating,” or SMAC, on Friday. The system aims to remove fake users from the platform as well as prevent fraudulent motion data from being uploaded to the STEPN app in order to profit unfairly from the platform.
The anti-cheating system’s description reads, “SMAC system specifically targets movement simulation by amending real walking/running data, thanks to our machine learning algorithm.”
The official STEPN account, however, tweeted about the attack, saying:
“We sincerely apologize to all the users who have been identified as bots. The moment this issue came to our knowledge, we started work on it immediately… due to a 25 million DDOS attack sent to the server within a short period of time. Due to network congestion, AI cannot receive user information and identify them as bots.”
According to reports, the move to earn application is back online because “data transfers have reopened and… also improved the rules and formulated processing and identification rules.” The report also emphasized the importance of an anti-cheating update, stating,
“The anti-cheating update may seem small, but it is actually an important cornerstone of STEPN’s long-term development.”
However, with most play-to-earn games, the main concern is whether the economy will be able to sustain itself as the number of users increases.
The StepN network plans to reduce the number of fraudulent users as part of its efforts to ensure a long-term economy in the game. While using the app, users can earn GST tokens by walking, jogging, or running.
However, if players can generate an inflated number of tokens using bots and GPS spoofing, the game is unlikely to succeed. The number of tokens that can be earned in a given time period, however, is limited.
The return on investment, on the other hand, is still positive, attracting opportunists. To earn more tokens, it should theoretically be possible to create bot accounts loaded with sneaker NFTs and spoof both GPS and gyro.
An increased number of bot farms that earn tokens and then dump them on the market could have an overall negative impact on the ecosystem.
Furthermore, the ability to earn tokens with bots in STEPN invalidates the application’s concept. The game should be able to distinguish between a bot and a real human player, which is what the new update aims to accomplish.
Despite the platform’s DDoS issues, the Green Satoshi Token (GST), STEPN’s native token, has not seen a significant drop in value over the last few days. The GST, on the other hand, is up around 10% in the last 24 hours, trading at $1.04 at the time of writing. According to CoinGecko data, the token’s market capitalization is $624 million.
STEPN announces double energy event to apologize for flagging users as bots
STEPN has announced the launch of a double energy event for Sunday, June 5.
From 8:00 a.m. ET to 8:00 p.m. ET, all participants will be able to double their energy cap.
For example, if your normal energy capacity is two, it will be four during the event.
There is, however, a maximum energy cap of 20. As a result, those with an energy capacity greater than ten will not receive double energy, but will instead be limited to 20 energy.
That is for a user whose energy capacity is 15. During the event, the energy capacity will be increased to 20.
Double energy also means double the refill amount. So for users who used to get 2 energy refills, during the event the energy refill will be 4.
However, for users who used to receive 5 energy refills, the same 5 energy refills will still be received during the event since the maximum energy refill is capped at 20.
